Left 9 this morning for Portland. Done our 5,000 miles. Very foggy all the morning, lovely afternoon, quite warm & sunny. Lovely drive through avenues of trees, arriving here at 5. Called at P. Office, got 2 letters, from Cantor & Everett, then drove through town for cabin 4 miles out of town. Lovely cabin for 1.50 each for 2 nights. Had good tea. Then to a good bedroom.

Lovely day, stayed in all the morning, getting ready for the Royal Garden Party. 18 went from this hotel [St Margaret’s], caused quite a sensation in the street waiting for the taxi’s. My dress looked very nice. A wonderful party, the King shook hands with me. The Queen looked charming & Queen Mary always in white. The biggest garden party Royalty had ever given, 10,000 guests. Saw quite a number that I knew. The entrance all carpeted in deep rose pink & gold. Very beautiful. Mrs & Mrs Spriggins called at night also Mrs Webb & Cantor. Had 12 people in the bedroom for supper – late night.

Another rotten day. Wet and gloomy. Received quite a number of letters. Had lunch at Buzzards, then to Overseas Club for At Home given by Lady De Boux. Quite a crowd with Ms Cantor and Miss Dunbar. Had long walk to train. No buses running, feeling the strain, and looking it. Had easy night then bed.
