Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 24 June: London to Chester, Chesire

Thursday, 24 June 1937

9.30 just got to bed in Queen’s [Queen] Hotel, Chester, feeling very tired. Had a nice run from London today. Morning tea at Oxford. Saw all the boys at Eton going to school in their high silk hats. Had lunch at Stratford on Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace, afternoon tea at Lichfield. Went to the Cathedral, lovely service on. Got to Chester at 7.30. Oldest city in England. Very nice hotel this. Left London at 8.30. Had a lovely drive, scenery so far not as good as Devon. At present, quite daylight at 9.30. Start tomorrow again at 8.30.

Sunshine at east, good position and lovely meals. Will make this our home for a week. Mr & Mrs Hick made us very welcome. Very large room. Mrs Everett & I sharing same. Did not sleep at all.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 13 May: Pass on Simpson’s-in-the-Strand

Thursday, 13 May 1937

A fine day, but dull. Met Mrs Everett, went into Simpson’s for lunch. When I saw the menu, 4/- for chops or steak, 1/9 for cauliflower, we came out and went to Slater’s for lunch 1/6. Laugh, we could hardly speak. Went to Australia House after and met quite a crowd of fellow passengers. Decided to go to Devon on Sunday. Coach takes 9 ½ hrs, train only 3 so will take the train.

Got mail from Belle early.
