Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 22 June: Royal Garden Party

Tuesday, 22 June 1937

Lovely day, stayed in all the morning, getting ready for the Royal Garden Party. 18 went from this hotel [St Margaret’s], caused quite a sensation in the street waiting for the taxi’s. My dress looked very nice. A wonderful party, the King shook hands with me. The Queen looked charming & Queen Mary always in white. The biggest garden party Royalty had ever given, 10,000 guests. Saw quite a number that I knew.  The entrance all carpeted in deep rose pink & gold. Very beautiful. Mrs & Mrs Spriggins called at night also Mrs Webb & Cantor. Had 12 people in the bedroom for supper – late night.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 9 June: Changing of the Colours then a day of high society parties

Wednesday, 9 June 1937

In pencil on top of page: Got a free ticket sent out to me but got it too late.

Lovely sunny day. Mrs E & I went to Changing of the Colours, paid 5/ – for seat. Had a very good view, lovely colours of uniforms. Queen Mary all in white, great crowds there. Came back for lunch, then special coach from Overseas [Club] to Highgate garden party given by Lady Marjorie Stirling. Rain came, had party in the house. Special coach left Highgate for O’Brien’s champagne party, at Chesham St. Had great time, Mrs Cantor there. Got back about 9.30 very tired. Some party, felt sick, put my finger down my throat – and returned the champagne.
