Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 26 August: No letters for three weeks

Thursday, 26 August 1937

Went to Australia House found no letters disappointed had none for 3 weeks – met Mr & Mrs Spriggins stayed with them all day – left them at 5 came home had dinner, Mrs Cantor & I went to pictures, then Strand Palace, for an orange drink.

Monday, 12 July 1937

Went to Australia House for mail. 2 from Bill, I each Bella & Jack, then went to C.P.R. to see about booking my passage to Montreal. Wrote to Jack Spriggins to see about right date. Had my lunch, rain came on, so  went back to the hotel. Wrapped up parcels, had a rest and stayed in the rest of the day. After dinner just sat in the Hall room and yarned. To bed about 11.

Monday, 21 June 1937

Went to Australia House for mail, only 1 from Bill. Met Mrs Webb & daughter. Had lunch at Regent Palace Hotel, not worth 2/3. Came back to A. H. Booked passage by coach to Edinburgh, £5.12.6., 2 days trip. Back to dinner then out to Mabel’s flat. Fred, Mabel & self went to Grand Ball at Countess Onslow’s at Guildford, a most wonderful palace [Clandon Park], such wealth I could not imagine. Had a great time.  Fred drove me home at 2.30.

Monday, 14 June 1937

Mrs Everett & I went to Aust House for mail, no letters until Wednesday. Walked around, came back for lunch, had rest till dinner time. All the N.Z. went to Savoy dinner for N.Z. had a rather quiet day. Feeling pretty tired.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 10 June: Lyons factory at Cadby Hall

Thursday, 10 June 1937

Went to Australia House, got my card for Royal Garden Party – also ticket for Changing of Colour, free one. Went with Mrs E to Strand Palace Hotel to see Mrs Webb. Had lunch at Lyons. Then out to Cadby Hall to go over Lyons big factory. Largest thing of its kind in the world. 20 miles of swiss rolls made every day, 6,000 employees. Had afternoon tea, came back to dinner. Mrs Webb came down at night and we had a game of bridge.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 1 June: Cocktail party in Belgrave Square

Tuesday, 1 June 1937

Met Mrs Everett at Australia House, had lunch there then took bus to Kew Gardens [Royal Botanic Gardens], one of the show gardens in London. Pay 6° to go in, nothing to rave about. Had afternoon tea, 1/ each, everything very stale and told the man so. Went to cocktail party at the Duchess of Airling [Airlie] in Belgrave Square. Had a lovely time, a big crowd there.
