Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 10 July: Bo’ness to York via Edinburgh, Alnwick and Durham

Saturday, 10 July 1937

Very wet, up at 5.30. Had breakfast. Jim, Elsie drove me down to the bus, which took me to Edinburgh. Pouring very heavy. Caught coach. Morning tea at side place, very wet; lunch at Alnwick, fine hotel, good lunch; afternoon tea at Durham, massive cathedral  there. Still very wet, too much so to walk about. Arrived at York Hotel [most likely the Royal York Hotel] at 7.30 – 2 bus loads, about 56 of us, a good crowd. Cleared up a little bit. Sat in the lounge for a while then to bed. Had a bad night.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 7 July: Royal Garden Party, Edinburgh

Wednesday, 7 July 1937

Went to Edinburgh after lunch The Royal Garden Party was on, look very dark & threatening. Elsie & I went into Gibsons for tea, sat on the balcony – the rain soon came down, a great storm. Streets all flooded, party spoilt. Cars of people simply went back home. Left Edinburgh at 5 – got back to tea. After tea, went with Jim & Mrs Smith to drive her home to Blackness. Had a couple of spots, then back again in the rain.

A very nice family – I was very hungry, as we had nothing to eat from lunch time until 9.

Wednesday, 23 June 1937

Another nice day, went to meet Mrs Collins & her daughter. Took them to lunch at Lyon’s Brasserie, then Miss Collins took us to see Balalaika. Best play in London. Catching coach at 8.30, first night at Chester – should arrive at Edinburgh on Friday night, feeling very tired.

Booked passage by coach to Edinburgh, £5.12.6., 2 days trip. Back to dinner then out to Mabel’s flat. Fred, Mabel & self went to Grand Ball at Countess Onslow’s at Guildford, a most wonderful palace [Clandon Park], such wealth I could not imagine. Had a great time.  Fred drove me home at 2.30.
