Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 22 June: Royal Garden Party

Tuesday, 22 June 1937

Lovely day, stayed in all the morning, getting ready for the Royal Garden Party. 18 went from this hotel [St Margaret’s], caused quite a sensation in the street waiting for the taxi’s. My dress looked very nice. A wonderful party, the King shook hands with me. The Queen looked charming & Queen Mary always in white. The biggest garden party Royalty had ever given, 10,000 guests. Saw quite a number that I knew.  The entrance all carpeted in deep rose pink & gold. Very beautiful. Mrs & Mrs Spriggins called at night also Mrs Webb & Cantor. Had 12 people in the bedroom for supper – late night.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 28 May: Chelsea Flower Show

Friday, 28 May 1937

Had a big day. Went to station at 9 to collect our lost luggage. Porter wanted to charge 1/- a packet for it. I saw the superintendent, so did not pay it. Got a taxi back. Then went to Westminster Abbey to see the decorations. Charged 5/ to go in, very beautiful, had lunch. Mrs Everett & I then took bus to Chelsea Flower Show, the greatest flower show in the world. Another 2/6 (the day before it was 10 /-). Walked & sat down at times, spent hours there, it was marvellous. After dinner went to the pictures. Saw Three Smart Girls, 2/6, a good show – got back at 12 – midnight.

[Note: The Chelsea Flower Show had a special “ Coronation Empire Exhibition” in 1937 in honour of the recent coronation. An image of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at the 1937 show.  This year (2013) the best show garden was awarded to Trailfinders Australian Garden by Fleming’s.]

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 27 April: The Royal Mint

Tuesday, 27 April 1937

Nice morning, met the N.Z. folks at 12. Had lunch at 12. Had lunch at Lyons, then bus out to the [Royal] Mint – opposite the Tower of London. Long walk, all very tired. Had afternoon tea there and went back to St Margaret’s Hotel to dinner and had a game of bridge at night. Raining heavy as I left, borrowed umbrella from Mrs Everett.

Went to several churches in the morning, the Temple and Temple Bar.

[St Margaret’s Hotel was situated at 26 Bedford Place. Thirza’s New Zealand friends were based there. After her visit to the Continent, Thirza relocated from 130 Belgrave Street to St Margaret’s.]
