02-301211_0015 — Sailing up the St Lawrence River aboard the Canadian Pacific ship, Duchess of Richmond

Lovely day. Sunny and warm, going up the St Lawrence River. Arrive at Quebec at 8. Had to pass Doctor & immigration before we were allowed ashore. Got on shore at 10, took sight seeing bus, 26 of us to the town, I dollar each. Lovely gardens and city wall. Went to Hotel Frontenac, a very large place. Went up to the 17^th floor to see the view, clean town. Got back to boat at 11.30. Boat left again at 1 for Montreal. Very pretty going up the river. Busy packing, taking our luggage at 6.

Nice day, sat on deck all day, pretty cold. After dinner sat in the lounge, watched them dancing. Little girl died this morning on board. 10 years old, flag flying half mast. Went to bed about 10 – pretty calm.

Very cold raw day, just sitting about. Saw two icebergs, some distance off. Very cold.

Rough weather, and rather wet. Young passenger, boy, missing from his berth, must have jumped overboard.

Sunday, 5 September 1937

Very wet and miserable, sat on deck all day. Went to Saloon for pictures in afternoon for 1 ½ hours. Sat on deck, very cold. Went to bed soon as dinner was over, too rough to sit around.

Saturday, 4 September 1937

Very heavy seas, pretty rough, great lot of passengers sick. I too went to sit in the open. Went to bed after lunch until 5, then again after dinner. Too rough to sit around. Better in bed. 2 nice girls cabin mates.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 2 September: Farewell London, a new frontier beckons

Thursday, 2 September 1937

Had breakfast ¼ to 8, left hotel with Mrs Cantor for Waterloo Station. Caught the 9 train to Southampton. The Spriggins in same train. Arrive at 11 o’clock, go through the style, show all passports, etc. Sailed at 1 o’clock, in the Duchess of Richmond, lovely boat 20,000 tonnes. Meals very good, orchestra at every meal also afternoon tea. Called Cherbourg at 6.30. Took on some passengers, also cars. A calm passage so far. Paid 4/+ for chair to lounge in. Walked the deck after dinner then to bed.
