Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 10 July: Bo’ness to York via Edinburgh, Alnwick and Durham

Saturday, 10 July 1937

Very wet, up at 5.30. Had breakfast. Jim, Elsie drove me down to the bus, which took me to Edinburgh. Pouring very heavy. Caught coach. Morning tea at side place, very wet; lunch at Alnwick, fine hotel, good lunch; afternoon tea at Durham, massive cathedral  there. Still very wet, too much so to walk about. Arrived at York Hotel [most likely the Royal York Hotel] at 7.30 – 2 bus loads, about 56 of us, a good crowd. Cleared up a little bit. Sat in the lounge for a while then to bed. Had a bad night.

Elsie & I went to Mrs Robertson’s for lunch. Had a lovely meal, everything served very nice. Left there about 5, got back at 6. Went straight on to Mrs McDougall’s to spend the evening, had supper at 9. Quite a big meal, then played the piano until 11.30 came home rather wet.

A very nice family – I was very hungry, as we had nothing to eat from lunch time until 9.

Dull today. Elsie did some washing, I put them out after lunch. Mr & Mrs Spriggins called, gave us quite a shock. Elsie made coffee, and we went in the Morris Minor, to show them the road. Want me to go to Canada with them & buy a car, which I have promised to do, leaving Sep 2nd – came back. We put them on the right road, came back to 48.

Elsie & I took coach to Glasgow, 1½ hours run. Met Mrs McWilliam. Went shopping in Glasgow. Then had lunch at Lewis, then had a look around Glasgow. Afternoon tea at the Rhul. Then Mr McWilliam took us to Dumbarton, a nice drive, has a V8, then back to his house at Mt Vernon. After tea we all went out to Burnside to see Mrs Gilmour, Mrs Findley’s aunt. Stayed there 1½ hours. Then back to Bo’ness, reach there at 11.45. Had supper and had a hot bath at 1.30 then off to bed, feeling very tired.

Sunday, 27 June 1937

Sunday, nice day, had dinner then went for a lovely run to Gleneagles. Had afternoon tea at Turnakum [Tormaukin] Hotel at Glendevon, then on to Gleneagles, the largest hotel I have seen so far. Have own baths, tennis, bowls, 2 golf courses of 18 holes, 1 at 9. Went through the ground floor, a  marvellous place, the grounds all enormous. Never seen anything like it, 40 mls from Bo’ness. Had a lovely drive back. Had supper at 10 then to bed, sprinkling with rain.
