Went to Edinburgh after lunch The Royal Garden Party was on, look very dark & threatening. Elsie & I went into Gibsons for tea, sat on the balcony – the rain soon came down, a great storm. Streets all flooded, party spoilt. Cars of people simply went back home. Left Edinburgh at 5 – got back to tea. After tea, went with Jim & Mrs Smith to drive her home to Blackness. Had a couple of spots, then back again in the rain.
Elsie and I went out visiting in the car. Called on Mrs Smith, she was out, then went to Mrs Macdougall, had tea with her. After tea, Jim took us for a nice drive to Corstorphine to see Mrs Robertson. Did not stay long, came back and had supper. Then to bed very late, the sun still shining brightly at 10 at night.
Nice day, went for a nice drive to Falkirk. Did some shopping, bought wool for Jack’s jumper. Elsie & I had afternoon tea there. Drove back then after tea, went with Jim & his mother and father for a drive in their new car to the Forth Bridge, at Queen’s Ferry [Queensferry], a lovely drive through all the rich estates back at 10. Had supper then to bed.
Left Chester 8.30 – second day on the trip to Scotland. Had morning tea at Lancaster, lunch at Ambleside. Lovely drive through lakes to Gretna Green. Had a look at Blacksmith shops where all the marriages were made through to Moffat. Had tea there. Reached Edinburgh at 8.15, Elsie, Jim and son, Jim to meet me. A nice drive of 19 miles to Bo’ness. Made me very welcome. Have a nice home, newly done up, very comfortable stay. Up to 12 yarning.
