Another lovely day. Went to church. Captain always takes the service. Played bridge in the afternoon, won 4° Played bridge again at night, won 4? Had supper in Mrs Everett’s cabin, Shandy and sandwiches. Went to bed about 12.

Saturday, 13 March 1937
Up early, glorious day again, very calm. Played Bull board before breakfast. Sports started again today. Sat on deck all morning. After lunch went to Mrs Everett’s cabin to fix her dress. Played bridge again at night, won 3.
Had supper in Mrs Hill’s cabin. I supplied the gin.

Another lovely day, played bridge all the afternoon, lost 6. Evening had fortune told by Molly Hall, everything good. Played bridge at night for love. Had supper; gin and tonic, an awful drink.

Beautiful weather, the sea very calm, just sat around the deck. Had a seat in cabin in the afternoon and played bridge at night; won 1.

Wednesday, 10 March 1937
Arrived in Colombo, about 5 in the morning. Up on deck, all excited. Landed at 9.30. 12 of us in party, went out to Mt Lavinia, wonderful, place full of natives, begging, all the way, went through temples, garden (?). Had drinks at the hotel, then back to Colombo, for lunch at the Oriental [http://www.grandoriental.com/], Then did shopping until 5. Rickshaw drive to Galle Face Hotel [https://plus.google.com/110128538091525344196/about?gl=au&hl=en]. Went over the hotel, then rickshaw back. Dinner again at the Oriental. Had dress made, got last launch back to boat. Had a wonderful day. The glamour of the East and the beggars was an eye opener to me. Bought 2 kimonos, 2 nighties & several small things. Mrs Everett , Mrs [E] McCabe [age 53] & self. Had a great time.

Lovely day. Much cooler at present
Had a game of bridge in the afternoon for love.
Had a good game of bridge in the evening won 2°
Had supper with Mrs Everett, bought bottle lager.

Awfully hot today, passing the equator.
Did not go to church. Fearfully very sick, on account of the heat had two doses of brandy went to bed all afternoon felt a bit better in the evening. Went to the lecture on pyramids at night.
Friday, 5 March 1937
Lovely day. Busy making hair for fancy dress dance tonight. Going as a tough guy. Mr [R.T.] Coulter [Dental surgeon aged 46, accompanied by Mrs P., 48, and Miss P., 17 of 592 Colombo St, Christchurch, NZ ] has lent me his clothes.
Made a mistake, put the dance down for Saturday instead of tonight.

Fancy dress tonight wonderful turn out. Hundreds in fancy dress. I went as a heavy champ, very hot, the first prize made on board was lemon squash – very nice. I went to bed very soon, as it was awfully hot.
Mrs [E] Hall [68, accompanied by Miss A., 34, & Miss D., 28, from NZ] gave a party in the front saloon, 16 of us. It was very nice. Fearfully hot today.

All sports started today a great crowd taking part – lovely weather. Had bridge drive at night, awful turn out.
