Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 7 July: Royal Garden Party, Edinburgh

Wednesday, 7 July 1937

Went to Edinburgh after lunch The Royal Garden Party was on, look very dark & threatening. Elsie & I went into Gibsons for tea, sat on the balcony – the rain soon came down, a great storm. Streets all flooded, party spoilt. Cars of people simply went back home. Left Edinburgh at 5 – got back to tea. After tea, went with Jim & Mrs Smith to drive her home to Blackness. Had a couple of spots, then back again in the rain.

Thirza Pidgeon’s 1937 World Tour – 22 June: Royal Garden Party

Tuesday, 22 June 1937

Lovely day, stayed in all the morning, getting ready for the Royal Garden Party. 18 went from this hotel [St Margaret’s], caused quite a sensation in the street waiting for the taxi’s. My dress looked very nice. A wonderful party, the King shook hands with me. The Queen looked charming & Queen Mary always in white. The biggest garden party Royalty had ever given, 10,000 guests. Saw quite a number that I knew.  The entrance all carpeted in deep rose pink & gold. Very beautiful. Mrs & Mrs Spriggins called at night also Mrs Webb & Cantor. Had 12 people in the bedroom for supper – late night.
